📝Reflecting on my incredible journey as a breastfeeding mother, this World Breastfeeding Week I celebrate nearly 600 days of nurturing my daughter with love and care.

📸If you want to know what I'm staring at in this photograph it's actually the most beautiful Asian elephants at the zoo. One of life's most amazing experiences as I gaze at a mother or aunt breastfeeding their calf.

🐘Did you know elephant's milk is really high in protein and has 100 times more protein than cow's milk?!

👩‍🔧This year's theme, 'Let's make breastfeeding and work, work' I've been able to stay by my daughter's side throughout the entire time I've been feeding her. It hasn't always been easy, but with hard work, determination, and support from Shaheda, Carmelle Gentle, Rosie, Vanisha, Ruth and whoever else we've met along the way. We've truly thrived together. Forever grateful for this bond we share! 🌟

This is why breastfeeding support needs to be accessible to all. This is why when we prepare for birth we should also prepare for infant / breastfeeding. This is why #blackbreastfeedingweek is needed.

It’s not the the mothers who failed it is the system who failed the parents.

This is an unfortunate horror story which can frighten others to consider breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is way more that food and far superior to formula. We need more money within the breastfeeding community as mothers need support to help reduce all the long term illness and health issues including death rates. Yes it is that deep, but at the end, everyone needs to have a choice on how they choose to feed their babies. Informed and supported choices is key.💯

We as a society need to do better to protect infant / breastfeeding. 💕.

Why Cultural Safety in Breastfeeding Matters

Black-Caribbean, Mixed-Black-Caribbean-White and Mixed-Black-African-White babies are at higher risk of Unexplained Death in Infancy and SIDS.

Breastfeeding lowers the risk of SIDS, so cultural safety in breastfeeding support actually saves lives. Biases and assumptions can assume that mothers from a particular ethnic background may not need support. Sometimes we can assume they have lots of family support. However family support and cultural influences can encourage parents to supplement breastfeeding with other milk or food. Early introduction of solids can be a particular issue. Making sure all families have evidenced baseed information around the guidelines is essential.

In Ruth's work in the NHS, and privately, she has personally witnessed disparities in maternal health care. We need to pay attention to biases and racial stereotypes, both our own and also call out those of our colleagues.

There is also a massive lack of ethnic diversity around breastfeeding imagery, both in breastfeeding information and also on social media and online sources. This needs to be immediately addressed.

Ruth set up Black Breastfeeding Week UK in 2018 to stop disparities, raise awareness of how cultural influences affect breastfeeding, how the history of slavery and racism affect breastfeeding in Black families today. She is also passionate about normalising and promoting long term breastfeeding.

There are lots of health disparities in the Black community that would be helped by an increase in breastfeeding rates.
